If you are trying to connect to a linux machine you will need to have samba installed and configured before you can connect.

So I followed these instructions to a t, and it doesn’t work. The error is “the network path cannot be found.” So I wonder, does this article presuppose that you have samba installed? (I’m trying to connect to a linux machine.)

Thanks for the very thorough solution — the first one I’ve yet found on the web that (a) worked for me on WinXP and (b) doesn’t require you to first uninstall(!) “File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks”. I was starting to think that mapping my work computer’s hard drives on my laptop at home was an impossible dream, but not any more!

Thanks for the detailed how to. Very well written! The only thing I would add for anyone out there who have attempted this from work to their home computer and have failed is to host the ssh server over port 443. This port is left open on most corporate networks for outgoing secure http and this is an easier option than having the network group to open up outgoing ports.

sharename is the name you have given to the shared folder to which you are going to map the network drive
